Holding Space for a Generation in Motion
In celebration of Shuying Academy’s 15th anniversary, Mother Tongue Media was invited to lead the creative development and media production for the New York alumni gathering.
Rather than approaching the evening as a conventional event recap, we set out to create a piece that reflected something deeper: the emotional journey shared by a generation of students who left home at a young age and built lives across cultures, languages, and continents.
Through a combination of documentary observation, archival reflection, and poetic narration, the film explores questions of identity, belonging, and time. What does it mean to leave home at sixteen? At what point does a city become your own? How do we reconcile the places we come from with the people we become?
The final film was anchored by an original voiceover written and directed by Lily Huang-Voronina, drawing inspiration from the lived experiences of the Shuying community and the broader Chinese diaspora. The piece culminates in the closing lines:
客从何处来?
当时只道是少年。
露从今夜白,
月是故乡明。
Presented without translation, the poem serves as both a cultural gesture and a creative choice — a reminder that not every experience needs to be explained in order to be understood.
For Mother Tongue Media, this project represents the kind of storytelling we care most deeply about: work that exists at the intersection of memory, migration, and cultural identity.
